Pigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone
Pigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone
Our skin, hair and eye colour are determined by pigments called melanin. The higher level of melanin results in darker skin, and People with lighter skin have less melanin. An imbalance and disorder of melanin can lead to inconsistent colouration, patterning and ‘blotches’.
Healthy skin appears normal and even. Despite this, damage (e.g., sun damage) produces extra melanin to help protect your skin. This may result in the deterioration of those cells that produce pigment, which prevents melanin production. This can be a recognisable skin condition when some parts of the skin turn darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation). That is called pigmentation.
At Dermaland, we use different methods to perform the right treatment to reduce superficial pigmentation, delivering desirable results. Pigmentation can be caused by different internal (e.g., Genetics and Hormones/Pregnancy) and external (e/.g, Sun damage, Environmental exposure and changes) factors. There are different types of pigmentations:
Superficial Pigmentation that is mainly caused by sun damage such as:
Sunspots
Age spots
Freckles
Dermal Pigmentation such as:
Pigmented acne scarring
Melasma
At Dermaland, we address certain types of pigmentation that are more common,
Age Spot
Age spots appear as flat brown, grey, or black spots on the skin. Age spots are also called liver spots, senile lentigo, solar lentigines, or sun spots. The spots have the same texture as the rest of the skin and usually occur on sun-exposed areas, and do not cause pain.
At Dermaland, we use different methods to perform the right treatment to reduce age spots and provide you with more even skin.
Sun Damage
When you are exposed to the sun in your teens and when you are younger, the sun damage will show up as brown, irregular sun spots after your thirties. Sun damage will be accompanied by redness and broken blood vessels. You must get the right treatments and apply the right products to address the visibility of sun damage.
Uneven Skin Tone
Sometimes, overproduction of melanin could result in some type of hyperpigmentation that refers to uneven skin tone. Uneven skin tone could happen due to UV, damage-induced inflammation or changes to hormone levels. Moreover, irregular cellular turnover, e.g. an uneven rate of exfoliation, could also result in the appearance of uneven skin tone.
Melasma
Melasma is a pigmentation disorder of the skin that is commonly seen among women with darker skin and on the face, and appears as dark spots and patches with irregular borders. Melasma could may caused by several factors such as pregnancy, the pill, hormone replacement therapy or simply naturally occurring higher levels of oestrogen.
Freckles
Freckles are one type of pigmentation often caused by genetics, ageing, sun damage or hormonal changes and occur on the most exposed areas of the body. It can be made worse by using inappropriate products on the skin (such as alcohol in fragrances) and continuing sun exposure and heat trauma. Different pigmentation types, such as age spots, freckles, and sunspots, usually appear as brown marks.
